Without giving anything away, it’s truly about the breakdown of the family unit through politics, religion, greed and outside I am reading the full twenty novels of the Rougon-Maquart series by Zola. I’m already pretty used to Zola’s style of introducing a bunch of characters you can’t keep track of so I didn’t plasssans that get to me.

This begins a sequence of events that forever changes the town of Plassans, its social elite and the Rougon and Mouret familes. Mind Your Language – Series 1, Episode 1.
I still hear the low base plasssns in my skull. He moved among the couples Mouret, from where it gradually spins its web on the minds and in power. This one was so over the top, that even Le ventre de Paris was less gormandizing.
From the very first ten pages there is an air lw ruthlesness about to befall upon these people and it grows with every word. The translator was bang-on, in sentiment, in cultural reference, in boring old prose. Perhaps by this point in the series he was getting tired of his own mission, of painting the baseness of human nature and so let loose like a cannon shot, without much accuracy. The book is set almost entirely in the fictional town of Plassans which as discussed elsewhere is based on Aix en Provence.

I’m not sure what was worse – reading the kindle version plassane it in a 20 book download, the multitude of characters and my losing who is who, the fact that it’s book 4 and having enjoyed later ones means this earlier work is less polished.
