There’s no denying Acker’s intelligence, but I found this to be a mess. The novel is also considered a metafictional text, which is aware of its status as a fictional piece. There was always something touching and trusting about Acker’s belief that her audience would not want a smooth finished product of the kind they could buy at any dime store, but would prefer to be in on the process — flying when she did, falling bloor she did, nothing leveled out or homogenized.

Text, illustration, mixed fonts, pages written in the author’s handwriting; narrative paragraphs become diary excepts which turn into poems which merge into drawings which become maps, graffiti, translations of latin odes and blatant, parodic plagiarism Imagining —as well as two book-length experiments in genre-ridden narrative, Rip-Off Red and Kathy Goes to Haiti Janey and her mentor Genet whose homosexuality prevents him from loving the girl: Each contract fell apart when Acker feuded with her editors.

It doesn’t seem to be related to the quality of the author’s work–I’ve experienced this sensation with feline-centric mystery novels penned by elderly women, and with Updike’s WASPy fables, and even with the masterworks of Saint Nabokov.

Its the very sense of the word intrepid. Hard, fast, frenetic and unapologetic, the imagery leaves a cold, disquieting impression and a desperate want for a shower, or something. Kathy Acker was the most intentional of writers, but paradoxically, while Blood and Guts propelled her mids sschool breakthrough, it was her least intended work. Right now I can speak as directly as I want ’cause no one gives a shit about writing and ideas, all amyone cares about is money. It is so hard to like this book with its clunky prose, weird drawings, garbled thinking, bizarre narrative, a sex-obsessed protagonist Also that weird thing abt President Carter— how could Acker get away with such nonsense here when Coover had to face so many problems with The Public Burning?

This was one of the most off-putting and obnoxious pieces of literature I’ve faced recently. Time I got one of those.
